Jarema Osofsky on Moon Gardens

Plant of the Episode

Schizachyrium scoparium

Little blue stem, which is so much easier to pronounce than the above botanical name, is one of my favorite ornamental grasses.

I am a sucker for that glaucous blue. This one is ‘Blue Heaven’. Photo from Hoffman Nursery, .

It’s a native, which makes me feel smug, but it is such a good looking and interesting plant.

I could not resist this half price beauty. and would happily have paid the $5 for something scruffier.

This new-to-me cultivar is called Smoke Signal, and though it looks almost red in the photo below, it was the purple-y smokey color that made me grab it.

My new Shizachyrium scoparium (hey did I spell that right on the first go?) ‘Smoke Signal’.

I find it difficult to articulate the color little blue stem turns in fall, but I love it. Photo from Hobby Seeds.

Moon gardens… the concept is storied and ancient, but it can be as simple as growing white blooms.

Jarema Osofsky wrote a book that has me thinking that I could add a lot of interest and scent to my new bowling alley garden, and/or to the containers that are so near to the sliding door of our living room.

Perhaps some good scents could waft in.
