88: Seth Pearsoll of the Philadelphia Flower Show and the Crocus

Plant of the Week:

The crocus

Clark Harris, poser.

Every spring in Greenwich, where we lived for over 30 years, this hillside bursts forth to say “HEY it’s spring, don’t you know” and I never took advantage of actually getting in amongst the crocuses until this creature, grand #4, and I were taking a walk spring of 2021. We both enjoyed it so much.

Artist Karen Blair

You heard me mention my friend Karen Blair on the pod. Karen is a local Charlottesville artist who sponsors Into the Garden with Leslie

Have a look at what Karen can do— she worked with one of my listeners, Anne Brooks Rudzki, of Capital Roots Containers, and created this beautiful commission of Anne Brook’s garden.

Follow this link to see more of her paintings.

And follow her on Instagram here.

Seth Pearsoll and the Philadelphia Flower Show

Seth announcing something important about the show.

Seth Pearsoll is the Creative Director of the Philadelphia Flower Show. This is a BIG job, and with just a few days to go, he probably doesn’t have time to smell any roses that are being loaded into the Pennsylvania Convention Center, where the great event takes place.

In talking with Seth about the show, I learned so much, and was the MOST impressed with the fact that ticket sales for over the top floral displays like what you see below are the reason that the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is able to accomplish SO much more…

Florid and fanciful— should we say ostentatious? Some might. But ticket sales result in some of the most down to earth projects you could hope for.

Here’s what it’s REALLY all about…

Tree planting are the easiest ones to photograph, but other projects include transforming vacant land, work force development events, storm water solutions, and community gardens.

The Philly Flower Show— not just another pretty face.
